Naritasan Temple

Just prior to taking an airplane at Narita airport, I visited Naritasan temple (成田山).

Main hall

The actual name of the Buddhist temple complex is called Naritasan Shinshoji (成田山新勝寺) that was established in AD 940. It belongs to the Shingon school Chisan branch (真言宗智山派)

Yaegaki Shrine

Posting Izumo shrines goes on...

Yaegaki shrine (八重垣神社) is the fourth shrine I visited on day one, where Susanoo (素盞鳴尊) and his wife, Kushinadahime (櫛稲田姫), are enshrined. Ohnamuchi/Ohkuni (大己貴命) and Aohatasakusahiko (青幡佐久佐日古命), who appears as Susanoo's son in Izumo fudoki (= ancient record in Izumo province/出雲国風土記), are also enshrined. Because of that, the shrine was formerly called Sakusa Shrine (佐久佐神社).

According to the Izumo fudoki, Aohatasakusahiko was originally enshrined there. Later on, the Yaegaki shirine that had been located in the Suga district was moved into the area of Sakusa shrine and Sakusa shrine was incorporated into Yaegaki shrine. Since 1922, the shrine has been called "Yaegaki shrine".

Main Hall with thick shimenawa

Behind the Haiden hall, there is a shrine called "Yamagami shrine (山神神社)", enshrining Iwanagahime (石長姫) and her dad, Ohyamatsumi (大山祇命).

Yamagami shrine
You see the ancient style torii gate (鳥居) and the symbol of man. The enshrined deity, Iwanagahime, has a younger sister called Konohayasakuyahime (木花之佐久夜毘売). Since Konohayasakuyahime is beautiful (but Iwanagahime is not), she became the wife of Ninigi (ニニギ), a grandson of Amaterasu (天照大神).

Here is the miserable story about Iwanagahime.

Konohanasakuyahime met Ninigi on the seashore and they fell in love; Ninigi asked Ohyamatsumi, the father of Konohanasakuyahime for her hand in marriage. Ohyamatsumi was pleased to hear that because Ninigi is the grandson of Amaterasu, who descended from the heaven to rule Ashiharanonakatsukuni. Ohyamatsumi gladly offered Ninigi Konohanasakuyahime and his older daughter, Iwanagahime, as well. Since Iwanagahime is ugly, Ninigi sent her back to Ohyamatsumi and married only with Konohayasakuyahime. Ohyamatsumi's intention of offering Ninigi his two daughters was to have Ninigi and his offspring to be long-lived life like hard rock ensured by Iwanagahime and prosperity like cherry (sakura) blossoms ensured by Konohayasakuyahime. Since Ninigi chose Konohayasakuyahime only, longevity became short and fleeting, like the sakura blossoms, instead of firm and everlasting, like stones.

Due to the above incident, Iwamagahime seeks male and male symbols are dedicated to her...

The shrine is believed to be the place where Susanoo hid Kushinadahime from Yamatanoorochi.

Kumano Taisha

It's time to post Kumano Taisha (熊野大社), Ichinomiya (= the highest rank) Shrine in Izumo Province (出雲国). It is also called "Hinomotohidezome no yashiro (the birthplace of making fire/日本火出初之社).

At Haiden hall of the Ichinomiya shrine in Izumo province enshrined is "Izanaginohimanako kaburogikumanoookami kusimikenunomikoto" (伊邪那伎日真名子 加夫呂伎熊野大神 櫛御気野命), decoding something like "A cherished offspring of Izanagi, a holy ancestral deity of foods in Kumano Taisha". The cryptographic name is adopted from Izumonokuninomiyatuko no kannyogoto (出雲国造神賀詞), a sort of letter/poetry submitted to the Emperor from the Governor in Izumo Province in the 8th century. Later on, in the 9th century, the enshrined deity is regarded as the same as Susanoo, one of offspring of Izanagi, according to Sendaikujihonngi (先代旧事本紀).

Yakumo bridge
Having walked across Iu river (意宇川), the second Torii welcomes you.

Zuishinmon gate in front and Haiden hall behind

To the right side Susanoo's wife,  Kushinadahime (櫛名田比売), is enshrined at Inada shrine (稲田神社). Ashinazuchi (Kushinadahime's dad - 足名椎), Tenazuchi (her mom - 手名椎), Misakinokami (御前神), Hayatamao no mikoto (速玉之男命), and Kushiyatama no mikoto (奇八玉命) are also enshrined at Inada shrine.

To the left, there is Izanami shrine (伊邪那美神社) where Susanoo's mom, Izanami (イザナミ), as well as Hayatamao no mikoto (速玉之男命), Kotosakanoo no mikoto (事解之男命), Ohta no kami (大田神), Kunado no kami (クナド神). Haniyamahime no mikoto (埴山姫命), and Amenokoyane no mikoto (天児屋根命) are enshrined.

When you see the red torii gate, then it's the Inari shrine (稲荷神社) enshrining Ukano mitama (ウカノミタマ), who is the offspring made between Susanoo and Kamuoochihime (神大市比売).

White foxes can be always seen at the Inari shrine.

Since Kumano Taisha is located in the middle of nowhere, renting a car is the easiest way to get there...

Suga Shrine Part Two

This is the part two entry of Suga Shrine (須我神社), stating the visit to Okumiya (奥宮).

Approximately after 8 min of slow driving (and getting lost), I found a parking space adjacent to the entrance to get into Okumiya. Then it's time for around 400-meter trekking under light rain... In the middle of walking, the first Torii gate is in your sight!

Along the steps, there is quite a few stones carved with Japanese poetry, again reminding you of this shrine being the birthplace of Waka.

Three rocks that are close together are called Meoto Iwa (夫婦岩/couple rocks). From big to small, these are considered as Susanoo (須佐之男命), Kushinadahime (奇稲田売命), and Suganoyuyamanushiminasarohikoyashima no mikoto (清之湯山主三名狭漏彦八島野命), respectively.

The faith in stone is denoted as Iwakura (磐座), one of the style of Nature Worships. Back in Age of the gods (Kamiyo) or even in the 21st Century, Japanese had (or still have) a sense of veneration of the dead (祖霊信仰) and Iwakura is considered to be the sacred object where spirits of their ancestors reside. Probably this place is the heart of Suga Shrine whereby ancient ritual ceremonies took place and worshipped Mt. Yakumo (八雲山) as Kannabi (神奈備), a form of worshipping mountain as sacred one, by using these rocks as a symbol. These three deities are enshrined there after their death by locals who appreciated Susanno's termination of Yamata no orochi...

Although the weather still sucked, I have to admit that I felt really good (sugasugashii/清々しい) by visiting there and this is probably my favorite place during Izumo trip!

It is definitely worth visiting.

Suga Shrine Part One

One of my dreams has come true!!!

I eventually had a chance to travel Izumo, Shimane (with neighboring cities included) and visited several shrines. My name was bestowed to me from Futaarasan Shrine (二荒山神社) in Nikko where Okuni (大国主命) is enshrined and I made up my mind to visit Izumo Taisha (出雲大社) someday. Okuni is enshrined there, just to let you know...

Izumo is sort of one of the places of Japan Myths and tales with tons of ancient and impressive shrines scattered in an old Izumo Province (出雲国). When compared to Nikko, not so many foreigners were there (as far as I've seen). That is probably due to inconvenient access from Tokyo and I think that renting a car is the best way to travel there.

Before visiting Izumo Taisha, I went to more than 10 shrines in one day and a half by renting a car from Yamaguchi city. Altogether, I drove 601 km within 48 hours!

The first shrine to upload in this entry is Suga Shrine (須我神社), located in Unnan city (雲南市). Susanoo (スサノオ), as well as his wife, Kushinadahime (櫛名田比売), and their offspring, Suganoyuyamanushiminasarohikoyashima no mikoto (清之湯山主三名狭漏彦八島野命), are enshrined there. Besides, the spirit of Takeminakata (建御名方神) in Suwa Taisha (諏訪大社) is transferred there.

It is said that the shrine was turned from the Palace that Susanoo built after his triumph in the extermination of Yamata no orochi (ヤマタノオロチ). Please visit here for more detail if you're interested in this monster. Since this was the first Palace being made in Japan, the shrine is called Nihon hatsunomiya ( = the first Palace in Japan/日本初之宮). He decided to settle there with his wife because when they arrived there, he felt good (sugasugashii/すがすがしい). That's why it's called Suga (須我).

When I arrived there, I did not feel good, because it was raining... Yes, it's currently a notorious rainy season in Japan...

Since Susanoo felt really good, he made poetry, Waka (和歌). That was the first Waka and due to this fact, this shrine is also known as the birthplace of Japanese poetry.

When I got there, it was around 8 AM when the priest just started to work. There was almost nobody there and I had breakfast after taking photos there.

What it says in the announcement at Haiden Hall (拝殿) in the photo above is that the shrine encourages visitors to visit Okumiya (奥宮), located at Mt. Yakumo (424.1 m). It's around 2 km away from Suga Shrine. I decided to get there by car.

Shoin Shrine in Hagi City

I had a chance to visit neighboring cities thanks to the generous offer from a Yamaguchi native!

There are two Shoin shrines (松陰神社) in Tokyo and Hagi city in Yamaguchi and I, of course, visited the latter one.

I think almost all Japanese can recognize him as one of the indispensable personnel in achieving Meiji Restoration (明治維新).

Probably due to his given name, Sho (松= pine) in (陰), lots of pine trees are planted there.

Tsunetomi Hachimangu in Yamaguchi City

Currently, I have a short stay in Yamaguchi city, located at the very western tip of the mainland, for around four weeks. This is my first weekend and I rambled new neighborhood on Sunday.

Sure, I visited a couple of local shrines! Two shrines are combined there: Tsunetomi Hachimangu (恒富八幡宮) and Takakurakou Shrine (高倉荒神社). Since it's named Hachimangu, Hondawakenomikoto, also known as Emperor Ohjin (応神天皇) is enshrined in Tsunetomi Hachimangu, as well as Ichikishimahime no mikoto (市杵嶋姫命), Takirihime no mikoto (多紀理毘売命), and Tagitsuhime no mikoto (多岐都比売命).

On the contrary, Takakurakou Shrine enshrines Sumanoo (須佐之男神) and Ukemochi (保食神)

It's a brand new building as they lost almost all buildings by fire in February 2002 (local newspaper article here in Japanese).

Our Beloved Orange Tabby

It was 15 years ago when I first encountered the orange tabby angel.

It was the middle of November and I was back from shopping at Montbell, holding a shopping bag in my left hand and keys in the right one. He was a stray kitty aged around 6 months then, burying himself in a paper box just below mailboxes by the entrance door of the dormitory where I lived. The box was filled with fliers, direct mailings, and free paper magazines. I could only recognize his small head. He's been staying in the paper box and making everlasting "Meow Meow" noise to everybody walking through the entrance door.

He was very friendly and talkative but nobody paid any attention to him...

Except me.

I must admit that there was an irreversible chemical reaction taking place deep inside my heart that unintentionally caused me to grab and put him in the Montbell shopping bag.

Later on, because of that, he was named "Mont" and yes, I kidnapped this little tiger.

Please excuse Ms. T's purple underwear (unwashed) revealed in public
I took him to my apt where, of course, pets were not allowed. I asked my then GF to buy him cat foods as I had zero experience of having a cat. I had been a hardcore dog person until then, but that orange tabby immediately and utterly converted me into a cat freak. We set his date of birth as May 26th, 1998 because he was born in the spring of that year and May 26 is my birthday. Mont and I celebrated each other on the same day.

He had no idea that this was the beginning of his bizarre adventure in THE WORLD!

After me defending Ph. D degree in the field of Bioscience (I became Dr. T.), he settled in New York City, Ames IA, Umeå Sweden, and went back to my home town, Utsunomiya, Japan. He made a round trip on Planet Earth!

When little orange Mountain started his journey we were the only two. He just turned 3 years old when he came to NYC. Mont survived September 11 attacks, anthrax bioterrorism attack in New York city, 2001,  and northwest blackout of 2003! Mont had a younger brother called "Bell", Russian blue bleed, in a short time window. For some reason he had to say goodbye to Bell as Bell had to move to Japan...

Nap time when he was in Big Apple

In 2003 we moved to Ames, Iowa. Ms. T. drove all the way to the field of dreams. It was only 5 days after her getting a driver's license and we just bought a used 4-door green Jeep Cherokee 3 days before leaving Big Apple. Mont was in a cage during 2 days of her driving and he survived this long journey.

We still have no idea why nothing good happened to us all when we were in the Midwest - car accident, racism, discrimination from the community, bad health condition of Mont... Absolutely nothing! Within a year, we left that vast corn and soybean field and flew to Umeå, Sweden, located just below the arctic circle. I left the US earlier to set up environment to welcome Mont in Sweden. I'm not going to describe how critical his health condition was when we left Iowa but it was very bad and Ms. T. saved his life. No kidding. He was 6 years old then.

Life in Umeå was pretty compatible to him. Ms. T. could spare more of her time taking better care of Mont and he regained his vigor relatively quickly. We met a very nice and skilled veterinarian and it meant a lot to him. About a year and a half later Mont got a new sister who was a freshly born kitty, a mixed Norwegian forest tabby. She reminded us of Gizmo in Gremlins, always full of energies.

Her name is "Tara" and Mont was 8 years old then.

Since Tara was a very easygoing and cheerful kitty with warm heart, Mont got along well with her. Well, they had cat fights from time to time but when it was time, they relied on and helped each other.

Altogether we got four members - Japanese orange short hair (Mont), Japanese black long hair (me), Polish yellow short hair (Ms. T.) and Sweden-born Norwegian forest thick gray hair (Tara).

In February, 2009, Mont landed his home country - Japan. Unusual snowstorm was waiting for us when arrived at Narita Airport. He was 11 years old. He's been doing fine for the first three years. I was lucky to be able to spend more time with him when we were in my hometown. That was when I started photography and whenever I bought a lens or a camera, the first shot was always Mont. Just because he was always by me. Mont and I enjoyed eating Japanese rice and fresh sashimi (see video below). He gained weight a little bit.

It was always Ms. T. who noticed the subtle changes in his health condition. In 2012 when his age hit 14, the fluctuation of his thyroid activity were too big that we could not find the optimum dosage of medication to have the thyroid activity under control... That was the beginning of the end.

We, especially Ms. T., struggled to cure Mont but he was becoming a VIP customer of our vet. I must mention that Mont was never an easy cat in terms of health condition even when he was little. He had a very sensitive stomach that was like made of very thin fragile glass. He was picky and had indigestion problems (throwing up even when eating proper dosage of food at once). We had to feed Mont one dry bit at a time, a few bits every 20 minutes whenever we were with Mont, even while sleeping. We always had his dry food under the pillow and fed him while dreaming. We even used to get up to make wet food twice a night.

But we were happy just being with him. Spending time with him cheered us all up! Mont was that type of creature. Or maybe we were too crazy for him, weren't we???

Mom, set us free...

Mont exerted his gumption to survive and prolong his life, hoping to see me again. Given the fact that almost all of his organs became dysfunctional, we were forced to come to the conclusion to give him an eternal catnap... The decision was so heartbreaking but witnessing our orange boy suffering was not our intention, either. The treatment was administrated at 8:30 AM on November 4th, 2013 (JST)... He was 15 years and 5 months.

Sadly, due to my working circumstances, I was not able to say goodbye to our beloved boy...

We all miss him like there is no tomorrow. We all love him deep from our hearts.

His memory is our treasure and his soul is always with us.

Always.

Ohsugi Shrine In Kanuma City

Itaga no Amba (板荷のアンバ様) is an annual festival that have been taking place at Itaga district in Kanuma city over 150 years.

Mikoshi procession led by Tengu (天狗) and small lion (獅子)  starts off at Ohsugi Shrine (大杉神社) and visits houses one by one to announce the spring and purify evil spirits.

Since the Mikoshi procession covers quite vast area (= Itaga district is so rural countryside), you can easily miss the procession. Sure, I did miss it. Well, to be honest, I did not even have a chance of getting a glimpse of it and that's why I am posting the pond I found at Ohsugi shrine...

I'm a New Convert

To the Church of Micro 4/3 - Olympus sect!

Olympus OM-D EM-5 with Panny LUMIX G VARIO 7-14mm/F4

I have used my beloved Nikon D200 for over 3 years and we had a really good time together. I always made offerings to the Church of Nikon F-mount but lately I've been brainwashed by compact system missionaries - Micro four thirds.

Nikon D200 with Sigma 15mm EX DG Fisheye

There are pros and cons of both DSLR and μ4/3 systems.
What I really appreciate in the μ4/3 system is relatively cheaper offerings of the lenses. However, the quality of the lenses is outstanding. Sure, it's very light weight and no mirror shock occurs while shooting.

Now I have "faith" in Olympus OM-D EM-5! This classic film camera-looking silver gadget comes with build-in image stabilization, weather-sealed body, tilting monitor, and 12 art filters.

Note that my first steps into the mirrorless denomination were made with Sigma DP1s two-odd years ago. Now my conversion has been completed!

My beloved wife understands and supports my new religious choice fully. I am a very lucky man. Thank you Mrs T for making this conversion possible! Now you are a Nikon believer (please take good care of the D200), but I am confident that soon you will also see the light, even if yours might turn out to be a Panasonic sect.

F-Mount God bless her.
