Stone Carving

That creepy stone Monk carving was found at the Seiganji Temple (清厳寺) in Utsunomiya city, Tochigi Prefecture. Stone carvings like that (though not always creepy) can be found at Buddhist temples and they are relatively new. I assume that they are sort of eye-catching mascots with vague significance both in history and religion...

This is a Sepia Scenes #123 and Alphabe-Thursday entry (V is for vague).

  1. Interesting statue, it looks smaller than a real person. Your B&W photos are always very nice too!

  8. Beautifully photographed. This is not the usual sort of statue I've seen at Buddhist temples.

  9. I like your use of shallow depth of field to accent the stone's textures and shapes, and to bring it forward from the busy background. The expressive features of the statue make it really unique. Excellent image Yoshi!

  12. Hmmm. I wouldn't call it creepy. I think it shows great emotion. :)

  13. Outstanding. Such drama. The mood of suffering is very strong and so unexpected in a temple garden.

  14. The black and white color is perfect in highlighting the statue's "emotion". Nice photo!

  15. Is it yearning or is it suffering?

  16. A bit creepy yes, but great emotion in the carving and nicely done in bw.

  20. Hmmm.... I don't think this one is creepy. He looks like he is carrying his alms bowl, his head tilted towards the heavens. His expression seems like that of acceptance, or mercy... almost as if he were ready to pass on & is accepting of that.
It would be interesting to see it in person.
