Yabusame Performance

Yabusame (流鏑馬) performance was dedicated to the Shinto deity, Toyokiiribiko (豊城入彦命), at Futaarayama Shrine (二荒山神社) in Utsunomiya downtown.
The performance took place last November during Kikusui Festival (菊水祭) but the photo I'm posting today...

Why?

I have been thinking about "Sacred horse" and "Ema (絵馬)" today. Lina, one of the lovely participants in "Show Me Japan", posted a beautiful B&W photo of "Ema" on her blog and I left a comment on it. Then I was asked to elaborate on this issue. And so I did with its historical background included.

Today on my blog, I might as well post a photo of an archer shooting an arrow while riding on a sacred horse!

This is a Camera Critters #144 and Sunday In My City entry.

  4. great action shot Yoshi! I love the look of intensity on the archer's face, and also the face of the horse. In answer to your query - Fahrenheit! sorry, I ought to have anticipated the question. in any case, it's very cold.

I also notice the archer's left foot is turned in the direction he's looking. beautiful photo Yoshi.

  7. It's a very EXCITING image. I love that the horse is heading right toward the viewer. It elevates the intensity of the image and puts me right in the moment.

All that color is incredible. I'll bet this is an event where you find a photo everywhere you look.

  15. I love this picture for so many reasons, mostly because it combines two things in which I've always been interested: horses and archery.

It's a very nice shot. Now I'm going to follow the links you've put in the post and see what I'll learn!
